CASIN

Event Summary

The China-Africa Shanghai International Network (CASIN) launched its first event on the afternoon of 25 March 2023 (GMT+8, Shanghai) under the theme of ‘China-Africa cultural salon’. This event featured four keynote speeches followed by a roundtable discussion and social interactions with the audience.

Ms Lan Qi, Founder of the WeChat Blog "Truth of Africa" and the first-generation KOL among China-Africa social media, hosted this cheerful event. Dr Jodie Yuzhou SUN, Senior Lecturer at the Department of History, Fudan University, opened the event and introduced CASIN, stressing that the research network opens up to all students, professionals, and scholars engaged in China-Africa activities in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The first speaker was Tommy TSE, Associate Professor, Media Studies Department, University of Amsterdam. His research investigates how, in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, China's global power is manifested, negotiated, and resisted in people's daily life in a South-South setting using fashion as an exemplary case. Following that, Dr Yuan Mingqing, Senior lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, interrogated the role of "humour" in the daily lives in Africa by looking at the comedy show business and its development history in Kenya.

Associate Professor Shi Donglai from the School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiaotong University, talked about internet celebrities of mixed China-Africa origins in the Chinese media since the 2000s. Lastly, Dr Huang Zhengli from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, took the audience on a tour of the Swahili town of Mombasa by exploring the historical and vernacular factors that shaped its astonishing material and cultural diversity.

This event attracted nearly a hundred visitors, including scholars, professionals and students who are interested in or originally from Africa. The audience actively participated in the interactive session following the formal presentations. Questions and discussions ranged from positionality and methodology to the practical questions of publications and global travelling. The discussions were vigorous and constructive. A special catering service offering Ghanaian-inspired snacks brought a little African taste to the event.

The event functioned as the opening page of the China-Africa Shanghai International Network (CASIN), a local network chapter of the Chinese in Africa/Africans in China Research Network (CA/AC), which aims to engage in critical and constructive conversations about China and Africa. A WeChat group was also created for the dissemination of future CASIN events.
