讲座简介
Based on the author’s recent book, The African Revolution: a history of the long nineteenth century (Princeton University Press, 2025), this presentation will explore the revolutionary ferment which characterised Africa’s long, and global, nineteenth century. This was an era of what can be termed creative volatility, in which new political and economic dynamics were underpinned by increasingly ambitious uses of violence. Moreover, this generated novel forms of liminality, characterised by innovation and agency as well as by coercion and victimhood. It is argued that the era of ‘The Scramble for Africa’ in the last decades of the nineteenth century cannot be understood without a deep understanding of the continent’s transformation in the decades preceding it. The partition of the continent and the imperial order which resulted were as much the culmination of African revolutionary dynamics as they were of European expansionism.
