(New School for Social Research)获博士学位,亦拥有建筑学背景。

Topic 1:
Emotions and Solidarity in the Global South: Examining Familiarity, Resonance, and Nostalgia
Speaker:
Lina Benabdallah, Associate Professor for the Politics & International Affairs Department at Wake Forest University
Lina Benabdallah is Associate Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University. She is the author of Shaping the Future of Power: Knowledge Production and Network-Building in China-Africa Relations (University of Michigan Press, 2020). Her research has appeared in International Studies Quarterly, International Studies Reviews, The Journal of International Relations and Development, Third World Quarterly, African Studies Quarterly, Project on Middle East Political Science, as well as in public facing outlets such as Foreign Affairs, the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage and Foreign Policy. Dr. Benabdallah spent Spring 2023 as a visiting fellow at the Center for African Studies at Harvard University and is currently serving as a co-editor of PS: Political Science and Politics.
This paper examines the salient emotional discourses prevalent in Global South encounters, and investigates the means through which emotions are constructed, how they are diffused, and how they lend a political solidarity to Global South politics centering around positive attributes including solidarity, friendship, mutual respect, and so on. The paper aims to demonstrate that tapping into emotional resonance and triggers for expanding China’s influence in the Global South based on familiarity and resonance can both grow out of organic affinities (anti-colonial shared history) and also be cultivated by the state through creating memorials, diffusing narratives that aim at activating these shared emotions, and sometimes also constructing new narratives on the back of old histories, nostalgic remembering, and imagined or reimagined pasts. To illustrate this point, I examine the utilization of the Ancient Silk Roads and the fourteenth century encounter between Chinese maritime navigators and Afro-Indian Ocean communities to present the Belt and Road Initiative as the new Silk Road which can revive the commercial prosperity of the Afro-Indian Ocean known to the area prior to the arrival of European imperial and colonial powers. The study contributes to scholarship that explores an array of nostalgic and other affectively charged narrative-memories in Global South politics.

Topic 2:
The Stories in the Stamps: The Local Presentation of China-constructed Projects
Speaker:
Ye Liu, Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences
LIU Ye is currently a Shuimu postdoctoral researcher at the Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences (TIAS). He studied at Sun Yat-sen University and the London School of Economics, and later received his PhD from the New School for Social Research in New York. He also has a background in architecture. Liu’s research focuses on the Third World, colonialism and empire, Sino-African relations, socialist revolution and modernity, modern archiectural and design politics, among others.
Stamps are not only a proof of postage, but also a mobile printed symbol of the declaration of sovereignty in the modern world. In my presentation, I will share my collection of three stamps issued by Guinea and Congo (Brazzaville) on China-aided construction projects during the Maoist era. They are the People's Palace in Conakry, Guinea (built during 1965-1967), the Kinsoundi Union Textile Factory in Brazzaville, Congo (1966-1969), and the Moukoukoulou Dam, Congo (1975-1979). I will interpret the imagery of the architecture, figures, and landscapes in the stamps with the help of other images and archival materials, and then briefly explain the broader story of what happened between China and Africa that they carry.

Topic 3:
Embodying Afro-Asia: Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble and the Making of Affective Bodyscapes
Speaker:
Yucong Hao, New York University Shanghai
Yucong Hao received her PhD from the University of Michigan, and currently teaches at NYU Shanghai. Working at the intersection of comparative literature, media history, and performance studies, she studies the global connectivity, postcolonial engagement, and racial imagination in modern Chinese literature and media.
When Zhao Shizhong, a veteran dancer from the Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble, recollects the history of the state troupe known for its staging of Third World performing arts, he believes that the ensemble was as an unparalleled window for PRC’s cultural diplomacy in the Bandung era. In this talk, however, I move beyond the analytical lens of cultural diplomacy, and instead examine the affective bodyscapes that the ensemble cultivated. Tracing the repertoire of African dance and music that the ensemble developed in both the socialist and the ensuing post-socialist era, I explore the emotional and corporeal traces that such performance inscribed on individual performers, processes of iteration and revision, as well as alternative artistic vista that it helped to envisage.
