16:15-17:00
Panel 2:Guest Speakers
Topic 1: Hip Hop and “Musical Activism” in Senegal(15’)
Speaker: Asligul Berktay, East China Normal University
How can music become a politically powerful instrument? The speaker will analyze the role of Hip Hop and what I define as “musical activism” within the context of the last three decades of Senegalese political history. As an art form based primarily on words and requiring comparatively few financial means for its production, Hip Hop remains more accessible to underprivileged youth. what has given Senegalese rap both its personality and power, while enabling it to keep an international aura, has been its political engagement to a greater extent than its artistic profusion.
Topic 2: Eating Chop-suey in South Africa(15’)
Speaker: Ying-ying Tiffany Liu, East China Normal University
During the last two decades, Chinese cuisine has become one of the most popular ethnic food choices in South Africa. Interestingly, the so-called “Canadian/Americanized Chinese food,” such as chop-suey, deep-fried batter chicken in sweet and sour sauce, and fortune cookies, can also be found in South Africa’s Chinese take-away restaurants.
This talk shows a variety of Chinese foods have been served in South Africa to satisfy different clienteles. You will see how adaptable Chinese food can be and how Chinese food is adding a bit more flavour to this already multicultural nation.
Topic 3: Exploring religious residential communities in the urbanizing Lagos(15’)
Speaker: Zheyuan Deng, University of Florida
In most African societies, religion is an indispensable part of people’s daily life, as seen in urban legends, posters, and buildings. In Lagos, the largest city in West Africa, urban spaces, such as the Lagos-Ibadan spiritual highway, religious cities and estates, have attracted many scholars’ attention. This presentation will use these religious residential communities as an example to discuss the unique role of religious organizations in the urbanization of Lagos.
